Application

Because of its extreme fineness and highsilicacontent, silica fume is a very effectivepozzolanicmaterial. Standard specifications for silica fume used in cementitious mixtures are ASTM C1240,[8]EN 13263.[9]

Silica fume is added tocementconcreteto improve its properties, in particular itscompressive strength, bond strength, andabrasionresistance. These improvements stem from both the mechanical improvements resulting from addition of a very fine powder to the cement paste mix as well as from thepozzolanic reactionsbetween the silica fume and freecalcium hydroxidein the paste.

Addition of silica fume also reduces thepermeabilityof concrete tochlorideions, which protects thereinforcing steelof concrete fromcorrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments such as coastal regions and those ofhumid continentalroadways and runways (because of the use ofdeicingsalts) andsaltwater bridges.

Effects of silica fume on different properties of fresh and hardened concrete include

a) Workability: With the addition of silica fume, theslumploss with time is directly proportional to increase in the silica fume content due to the introduction of large surface area in the concrete mix by its addition. Although the slump decreases, the mix remains highly cohesive.

b)Segregation and bleeding: Silica fume reduces bleeding significantly because the free water is consumed in wetting of the large surface area of the silica fume and hence the free water left in the mix for bleeding also decreases. Silica fume also blocks the pores in the fresh concrete so water within the concrete is not allowed to come to the surface.

Application Areas:

  • High performance concrete
  • High strength, low permeability concrete
  • Industrial flooring
  • Water tanks and sumps
  • Chemical storage tanks
  • Basements and sewerage pipelines
  • Refractory mixes etc.

FAQ's of Microsilica Silica Fume:

Q: How is Microsilica Silica Fume typically used in industrial applications?

A: Microsilica Silica Fume is commonly added to concrete mixes, castables, and refractory linings to enhance their compressive strength, durability, and resistance to chemicals and high temperatures, making it ideal for demanding industrial settings.

Q: What benefits does using high purity Microsilica Silica Fume provide?

A: The 99% purity and over 90% SiO2 content ensure superior chemical and thermal stability, improve the density and mechanical properties of end products, and increase their lifespan under extreme industrial conditions.

Q: When should Microsilica Silica Fume be incorporated into refractory production?

A: It should be mixed during the initial formulation or batching stage of refractory manufacturing or concrete mixing to ensure even distribution and optimal performance in the finished product.

Q: Where is your Microsilica Silica Fume manufactured and supplied from?

A: Our Microsilica Silica Fume is manufactured and supplied from India, ensuring high standards of quality and consistent supply for both domestic and international industrial clients.

Q: What is the process of producing high purity Microsilica Silica Fume?

A: Microsilica is collected as a by-product during the production of silicon or ferrosilicon alloys in electric arc furnaces. The fine particles are then processed and refined to achieve high purity, neutral refractory properties, and consistent quality.

Q: How does the neutral refractory nature of Microsilica Silica Fume benefit industrial applications?

A: Its neutral refractory nature provides excellent compatibility with both acidic and basic materials, reducing the risk of unwanted chemical reactions and enhancing the durability of industrial linings and other applications.
